If you’ve never been to Tokyo, you should know that the city is a hybrid of traditional Japanese culture and modern technological advancement. Looking in one direction, a visitor may find themselves facing an ancient shrine, while behind them may loom a pachinko arcade and a hedgehog cafe. Whatever your wildest desires may be, you will certainly find it in Tokyo.

On a recent trip to Japan, my travel companions and I wanted to experience as much variety as possible in Tokyo. My friend wanted to have sushi prepared by a world-famous sushi chef. My wife wanted to see an ancient Japanese castle and explore the otaku district dedicated to super-fans of manga. I wanted to have my picture taken in a doorway shaped like a vagina.

When I was preparing for our vacation, I stumbled upon a list of the weirdest theme bars in Tokyo and discovered Vibe Bar Wild One, a theme bar that houses just what you might imagine. I didn’t think it possible that there really existed a bar dedicated to vibrators, especially not one that had a vaginal doorway, but I was wrong.

This was the only thing on my “Must See” list in Japan, and I was not disappointed.

We found Vibe Bar nestled away in one of the quieter corners of the edgy Shibuya district. The Wild One Sex Shop downstairs sells the toys, but a visit to the bar allows patrons the opportunity to touch and fondle the merchandise to truly research just what they might want to bring home.

Once you ring the bell and pay the entrance fee, two bartenders take your shoes and your drink order. You are beckoned through the vaginal doorway into a small bar decorated with a plethora of sexual paraphernalia. Along the bar are hundreds of vibrators of every imaginable shape, size, color, speed, and texture. You will also find sculptures, chairs with backs shaped like vaginas, and a variety of lubricants.

Vibe Bar

It’s a vibrating wonderland.

Vibe Bar was opened in 2013 as a safe place to challenge the awkward stigma about female sexuality and to embrace positive attitudes about sex toys. With your entrance fee, you get two drinks and can stay for 90 minutes; because it’s a tiny bar, it can only accommodate about 10-15 people, so your time is limited. For non-Japanese speakers, a handout is given describing some helpful information:

Our concept is “See, touch, and feel.” With more than 350 Japanese and international brands of vibrators on display, it’s a great chance to see, touch, and feel any of them first-hand. Maybe you will find the one you have been looking for.

While you’re there, you can test and shake hands with as many buzzing toys as you’d like. No, you cannot take the toy for a spin in the restroom, but you can turn them on to get a sense of the vibrator’s intensity and discuss what may be the best fit for your own body, so to speak.

I sat back in my booth with my elbow propped on an impressive strap-on attached to a mannequin, taking it all in. There was a straight couple at the table beside us who were clearly researching a buzzing new Rabbit-shaped friend to take back home. There was also a group of girls who oohed and aahed rather than giggling uncomfortably. Though this bar is clearly directed toward women, men are welcome — but only if they are accompanied by a woman. This is clearly designed to make sure that the atmosphere remains inclusive, safe, and comfortable for all patrons involved.

This bar breaks down barriers, celebrating masturbation and sex in all of it’s wonderful, fun glory. I almost cannot picture a place like this existing in the United States because of the divide between puritanical values, squeamishness about female sexuality, and misconceptions about the use of sex toys. Japan is known for its breakthroughs in the world of technology, but this pushes the envelope even further in the realm of sexuality.

I’m so glad that I was able to pass through that magical vaginal doorway to experience something so completely freeing, fun, and different.
